Queens
Strong colonies begin with quality queens. As the mother of the colony, a queen passes along the traits that shape the health, temperament, productivity, and resilience of future generations. At Keys To Bees, we carefully select for queen health and the desirable characteristics each queen can pass on to her offspring. Our queens are bred from a cross of Italian, Carniolan, and select Buckfast genetics. As a teaching apiary, we prioritize docile behavior first and honey production second, making our queens well suited for calm, manageable colonies. We also allow winter survival to guide natural selection. Colonies that cannot maintain low Varroa mite levels with our assistance are gradually replaced with stronger, higher-quality stock. Building preferred traits into an apiary takes time and patience, and our breeding program is dedicated to raising queens that support healthy, dependable colonies.

Our mission is to provide fellow beekeepers with healthy, hardy queens selected from the best of each season. Our locally raised, overwintered honey bee queens feature mixed genetics derived primarily from Italian, Carniolan, and Buckfast stock. Prices vary with every season, contact us for availability.
